The Elegance of Arches

At Susan Semmelmann Interiors, we love working with our clients to add beautiful architectural elements to their home design plans; this week, we highlight elegant arches! The construction detailing process allows us to add these stunning features to the foundation of a home’s design, establishing unique character and setting the groundwork for all of the details that go into the finished product. The addition of arches brings organic motion and flow to a space, providing visual interest and soft lines that are pleasing to the eye. Notice the hypnotic repetition of pattern in the long hallway and the artful variation of arches used to create the open-air corridor; they both add bold personality to the design and act as an invitation to approach and explore. Arches also provide a welcome interruption to the dominant linear lines inherent in the construction of a home. The juxtaposition of curves against angles is shown in the kitchen design as the barrel curvature of the tiled ceiling and arched window play against the strong lines of the marble island and mullioned window. The living room image also highlights the tension between curves and lines with its playful choice of doorways designed to offset one another and echo the structure of the room.
